Featured on the App Store "Apps for Middle School", August, 2013, Geometry Combat enables students to practice applying geometric area formulas in an entertaining, game-like environment with a cage fight theme.
In Geometry Combat, players alternate turns to see who can calculate areas of simple geometric shapes with the best time and accuracy. The game contains over 100 shape images including squares, rectangles, triangles, trapezoids and parallelograms.
For each geometric figure, players must graphically determine the needed lengths/heights, and perform quick mental calculations. All answers are integers less than 40 and presented as multiple choice.
Questions are geared towards grades 5 - 7. While some problems can be solved by counting squares, the majority require use of area formulas. As each students comfort level with the formulas increases, his or her performance in the ring improves.
At any time, players can access the required area formula by touching the "Formula" button. The stopwatch is held during formula review, encouraging students to use this feature as often a necessary and learn as they play.
Each round contains five randomly selected geometric shapes. Matches are 3 rounds per player. A "Current rankings" score tally follows each round. Practice mode is also available allowing students to build confidence before competing with classmates.
Best rounds of all time are entered into the "Best fighters" hall of fame along with players name, percentage score, and round time.
In keeping with the cage fight theme, players are encouraged to give their fighters a cool name and type in a little "trash talk" before each round. All trash talk messages are then delivered to the opposing player at the beginning of his or her turn… ensuring matches are both spirited and entertaining.
